SALT LAKE CITY — The National Weather Service of Salt Lake City issued a winter weather advisory along the Wasatch Front and in the valley lasting from 6 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday. The service reported the valleys could see about three to five inches of snow accompanied by gusty winds causing drifting snow.

Mountain routes are expected to be the most impacted, “likely degrading overnight,” according to the winter advisory. As the roads get wetter overnight, drivers should be prepared for icy roads in the morning.

The National Weather Service warns surrounding areas like Iron, Beaver and Millard counties may also experience winter driving conditions along I-15.

Earlier on Saturday, the Utah Avalanche Center (Center) warned outdoor enthusiasts that the heavy snow expected this weekend will aggravate an already existing danger of avalanches.

Avalanche forecaster Craig Gordon said anybody going into Utah’s backcountry must be prepared with emergency gear and with the latest information from the Utah Avalanche Center.

Late Saturday afternoon, the Utah Department of Transportation avalanche mitigation team tweeted that a full northside closure would be in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday night to 8 a.m. Sunday morning for avalanche mitigation work.

We want to hear from you.
