SALT LAKE CITY — A winter storm that has supposed to hit much of Utah Wednesday night appears to have fizzled out before it could add to the snow totals around the state. But experts warn to be ready for a cold Thursday morning.

Still, KSL meteorologist Kristin Van Dyke says some Utahns will still get some snow.

“We are going to see it mainly affecting Salt Lake County southward,” she said. “And then back through the mountains and the Wasatch Back.”

She says those areas could see up to 3 inches of snow. While the mountains won’t get the foot or more of snow that was forecasted earlier the week, Van Dyke says the mountains could still see 7 to 8 inches of snow.

Winds will make Thursday morning cold

“I think the winds are drying out the moisture,” Van Dyke said. “It’s drying out the snow.”

And while there wasn’t as much snow forecasted from this storm, Van Dyke says to expect much colder temperatures.

“We’re going to see these strong winds and temperatures are really going to drop tonight,” she said. “And we’re going to be looking at lows in the low teens, some places in the single digits. But we’re going to keep these gusty winds around. and so, when we wake up tomorrow morning our windchill could be anywhere along the Wasatch Front from zero to 20 degrees below zero.”
