STANSBURY PARK, Utah — A man found dead by FBI agents moving in to serve a search warrant in Stansbury Park this week faced federal charges related to a scheme involving the theft and resale of baby formula, CPAP masks and other medical supplies, KSL has learned.

FBI agents found Preston Carr, 53, dead inside his home Tuesday. He appeared to have died by suicide, the FBI said.

A baby formula theft and resale scheme

Court documents show a federal grand jury indicted Carr in December 2023 on charges of wire fraud and money laundering. He was accused of ordering more medical supplies, including baby formula and CPAP masks than his former employer, Intermountain Healthcare, needed. Court documents suggest he resold the excess items and kept the cash.

According to the court filings, Carr made nearly $1.5 million in the scheme over five years. Eventually, Intermountain Healthcare discovered the theft of baby formula and other supplies and fired him in 2019.

Carr allegedly spent the money on cars, houses and even comic books, as well as other things.

Heavy FBI presence on scene

The FBI sent agents to Carr’s home Tuesday after he missed a scheduled court hearing on Monday. In the process of serving a search warrant, they found Carr dead.

Neighbors called, texted and emailed KSL on Tuesday, concerned about the heavy law enforcement presence at Carr’s home in Stansbury Park, which sits on Winchester Drive near Rose Springs Elementary School. The school did not require a lockout or lockdown, as a district spokesperson told KSL the police activity concluded by about 7:30 Tuesday morning.

In a statement, Intermountain Healthcare called the situation “sad and unfortunate.” They added, “No patients were harmed because of this illegal activity.”
