PAYSON – UTA’s FrontRunner train ends its Southern line at the Provo central station, but that will likely change over the next few years. The decision came after the transit authority conducted a study around the needs of those living along the Southern Wasatch front.

“The study concluded that going to Payson with FrontRunner would eliminate transportation concerns,” Robert Mills, Payson’s development services director said.

“Payson would be the end-of-the-line station for the near-term, maybe the next thirty or forty years.”

Mills said UTA has already purchased an old Union Pacific line extending South from Provo down to Payson. The transit authority is footing the bill on a new Payson station at the city’s North end. Mills has already heard plans to develop the land around the future site.

“When the train does come, it will fit seamlessly into the area,” Mills said higher-density residential, retail, and civic spaces will be the “New gateway to Payson” along with a new UDOT interchange for North main Street.

If Payson does get the FrontRunner, then only the one track will be used, but Mills thinks that can change.

“I know that UTA wants to focus on better predictability of their trains, and more frequent service. Double-tracking really helps to accomplish those things.”

If more track is built, then it won’t be for a while. In fact, no hard construction timeline exists yet. Still, Payson residents, UTA, and landowners all seem onboard with the idea of bringing the train further South.
