SLC ordinance looks to change zoning barriers, historic building eligibility

SALT LAKE CITY — A proposed Salt Lake City ordinance would change zoning barriers and historic eligibility of buildings. And, it would help preserve and keep existing buildings in use.
Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall initiated the proposal. The goal is to create more flexibility of use in certain buildings. Some buildings could be converted into multi-family residential units, even if the property was zoned as institutional or public land.
According to Salt Lake Planning Commission Deputy Planning Director Michaela Oktay, the changes could also help preserve the integrity of existing neighborhoods.
Additionally, the ordinance would change the requirements for a building to be named as historical. It would allow any building that is 50 years or older to be preserved or reused.
The planning commission passed the proposed Salt Lake City ordinance unanimously. Next, it will be heard by the city council later this week.
