SANDY, Utah — Sandy police are investigating a dog attack,  of a girl Friday evening at Flat Iron Mesa Park at 1700 East and 8600 South.

According to police, the incident happened at 9:30 p.m. The girl was taken to an area hospital where she was treated for wounds to her face.

A short time later, animal control from Sandy City arrived on the scene. It was then determined that the dog and its owner had fled the scene.

As required by the state health department, animal control personnel gathered victim information to conduct a rabies control investigation.

Authorities say primal predator-prey drive instinct. When a dog sees something moving oddly at a high rate of speed, like a child on a skateboard or sled, it will instinctively chase, attack, and bite.

Authorities also remind the public this is the very reason leash laws are in place in Sandy. Additionally, leash signs are posted at every one of the Sandy City parks.

Furthermore, police also say pet registration requirements are also for this reason. Through pet licenses, the city can regulate the rabies vaccinations in the pet population.

Currently, police are still searching for the dog owner in this case. If you have information, you are asked to contact, the Sandy City Police Department.

Earlier in the day, the family of the girl had to have her 11-year-old dog put down because of health problems.
